Printmaking is a centuries old medium and Indian woodblock carving is no exception. This art form is eco conscious, uses natural dyes, and employs artisans. This artform has been threatened by fast fashion, screen print knockoffs, and a decline in natural dyes. Despite its popularity artisans have been dwindling alarmingly fast. As a master printer, and an apprentice to an Indian block printer, I have spent the last ten years devising curriculum and teaching this at Pyramid
Atlantic, the Smithsonian associates, the GW textile Museum and many more. While I have found natural dyeing classes here,-I have found no practitioners who teach this form of carving in the US. Rather than encourage people to go to India, I want to popularize block printing and run classes here. I am asking for 20k to outfit an existing building with dye specific equipment. Help me start a block printing school and keep this artform alive and well.
